I have immense pleasure and satisfaction to present a dedicated children’s hospital in this far eastern corner of the country, where general healthcare status remains far below the acceptable standard. Compared to pediatric and neonatal healthcare given in our metropolis and developed world, the existing healthcare has provided you with less than rudimentary care. It is heartbreaking to see a tiny baby critically sick in a decompensated state losing his fight for life in our general emergency rooms or so-called casualty rooms. If only our emergency rooms were operated by personnel with exposure to basic life support protocols supported by minimal equipment, we would have been able to save many precious lives, as an intervention during the golden hour is so crucial for a positive outcome in a very sick child. Even if the child comes out of an acute life-threatening episode, most hospitals do not have the provision for delivering life-saving interventions, maintaining status and continuous monitoring.
In neonatal health care, many babies are born without the facility for optimum resuscitation or trained and qualified paediatricians. Sick neonates are offered a limited number of nursery beds with rudimentary infrastructure. I feel very hurt and outraged when a life, which could have been saved with good infrastructure and trained doctors, is helplessly lost. Looking after very sick neonates and children is a very labour-intensive and tense job. However, it is also gratifying to see a limp, pale, non-breathing, apparently lifeless infant become pink and kicking again in a matter of minutes. Another important aspect of intensive care is the price. Healthcare available but not affordable is as good as no healthcare. So we have our standing policy of cutting the price and giving concessions to the poor.
In the past, we have had to turn down patients due to the unavailability of beds. Before us, sick patients had to attend general casualty services as the nighttime pediatric emergencies were not functional yet. Hence we decided to start the first dedicated children’s hospital with a significant emphasis on intensive neonatal and pediatric care units and pediatric emergency compatible with advanced life support drills. Today, our 24/7 emergency services are up and running to aid any child in need.
Though we had many hurdles to manoeuvre, we overcame them. Intensive care service is more about attitude than resources, though both have influential roles. We believe we can increase our capacity to take more of you to help.
In 2019, we launched the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) Post-Graduate Program, where we train medical graduates to become pediatric specialists who can join medical colleges as post-graduate teaching faculties.
Surgery is an essential aspect of pediatric health care that is prominent in its deficiency. Poor post-operative care can often undo the excellent work done by a pediatric surgeon. Therefore there is also an absolute need for a dependable intensive care unit to care for post-operative pediatric cases. I’m pleased also to fill this void in pediatric healthcare with the services of a pediatric surgeon and a state-of-the-art pediatric intensive care unit.
The latest addition to our hospital is a fully equipped cardiac unit with 24/7 referral facilities for cardiologists and cardiac surgeons supported by a Cath lab and cardiac lab. These features will allow children suffering from complex congenital heart diseases to receive exceptional treatment.
We have crossed many milestones and will continue to do so, striving toward nothing but the best quality pediatric care for the years to come.
I wish all my beloved children and infants a long, beautiful, healthy life.
